Oscar Reed Headshot 2025-26

Oscar Reed Jr.

Oscar Reed Jr. is now in his second year back at Alcorn, serving as an assistant coach under Head Coach Carlton Hardy. A proven recruiter and respected pitching mind, Reed returned to Alcorn after a standout two-year stint at Alvin Community College in Texas.

While with the Dolphins, he assisted with the pitching staff that posted a 4.88 team ERA (fourth-best in one of the strongest leagues in the country) in the NJCAA Division I Region 14 conference. Reed helped to propel the program to a No.12 national ranking in spring 2025 – the highest in school history. Under his leadership, seven players earned all-conference or all-region honors, and 20 advanced to NCAA Division I programs. Recognized as a strategic recruiter, Reed successfully recruited Power 4 talent to Alvin within his first two months. Because of his efforts, he was promoted to recruiting coordinator after his first year.

Prior to his time at Alvin CC, Reed served as head coach for the Houston Wildcatters. The Wildcatters are one of the most prominent and respected baseball organizations in the country, and a proven pipeline for elite talent, developing players who have advanced to compete at the junior college and NCAA Division I levels. His commitment to player development and competitive excellence helped accelerate the wildcatters’ reputation.

Originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, Reed launched his coaching career in 2010, serving as head coach for Crescent City Baptist High School in Metairie, Louisiana. During his first year, his team’s high-powered offense averaged 10 runs per game, advancing to the regional round of the Louisiana State playoffs. He would finish the season with a 20-7 record.

In 2012, Reed earned an internship opportunity at Houston Christian University, working under Athletic Director Steve Moniaci and Assistant Athletic Director David Moss in Compliance and Academics. The following year, he returned to the field as the pitching coach for Prairie View A&M University under Waskayla Cullivan. Reed held the title of pitching coach helping the Panthers reach the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament. The Panthers finished fifth in the conference in team earned run average (ERA).

Some of the players he helped to develop include the following:

  • Darrien Williams – MLB 26th Round Draft Pick
  • Johnathan Harmon – MLB 13th Round Draft Pick
  • AJ Helms – 47 strikeouts in 2013; 2.22 ERA (Top 10 in SWAC)
  • Johnathan Mata – strikeouts in 2014; 4,24 ERA

The following season, Reed joined Alcorn as the pitching coach. During the same season Reed was promoted to hitting coach, where his offense concluded the season with a .309 batting average in conference play with 36 total home runs. Reed also oversaw the Braves outfield, working with the last MLB Draft Pick from Alcorn (Earl Burl III).

At the conclusion of the season, Reed was promoted to Interim Head Coach, overseeing the Braves daily operations.

In Reed’s two-year stint at Alcorn, both teams competed in postseason SWAC Tournament play.

In 2016, Reed was appointed head coach at Leesville High School, where he quickly revitalized the program by ending a four-year postseason absence in his first season at the helm. He guided the Wampus Cats to back-to-back LHSAA State Tournament appearances and increased the team’s winning percentage by 50 percent across both seasons. Reed helped to develop Johnathan Harmon, who later went on to play for Northwestern State. Harmon was later drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 13th round of the 2022 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft.

Under Reed’s leadership, the Wampus Cats maintained a team GPA north of a 3.0 and earned a perfect 100 percent graduation rate. He also led successful marketing and fundraising initiatives raising $50,000 in two years with Leesville.

As a player, Reed played collegiately at Prairie View A&M, where he was a two-year letterwinner. He concluded his collegiate career hitting .351 as a senior with three home runs, 15 doubles, and 33 RBIs. Reed earned his associate degree from Baton Rouge Community College in 2007, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Prairie View A&M in 2009, and a masters’ degree in sports administration from Canisius in 2012.

Reed is also a proud member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

Reed has one son, Santana.
