LORMAN, Miss. – Jade McQueen homered and drove in two runs in helping visiting Texas Southern post a 10-1 victory over Alcorn on Saturday afternoon at Alcorn Softball Complex to sweep the three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball series.
Â
McQueen, the Tigers first baseman, finished 3-for-3 with a home run, a pair of stolen bases, and two RBIs to pace a Tigers offense that produced 12 hits and scored in four of five innings. Dania Durr went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Katelynn Cooper and Marisa Perla each added two-hit efforts with an RBI apiece.
Â
Texas Southern (23-10, 12-6 SWAC) broke the game open with a four-run second inning, kicking off with McQueen's solo blast to right center. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Durr and Perla, followed by a run-scoring single from Kylie Wilson at the top of the lineup, pushed the lead to 4-0.
Â
The Tigers added two more in the third, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Â
Melonie Guardiola was sharp in the circle, going the distance for the win.
Â
The right-hander allowed just three hits and one run over five innings, walking one and striking out one, to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Â
Alcorn (13-26, 1-14 SWAC) managed its only run in the bottom of the fifth when
Adriyana Ruffin laced a two-out triple to right field, plating
Jamyiyah Cotten. Starter
Chiara Olison took the loss, falling to 7-15 after surrendering four runs on five hits in two innings.
Â
The Braves were held to three hits on the afternoon.
Â
Alcorn will look to turn things around on Tuesday, April 14, as the Purple and Gold travel to Memphis for a nonconference midweek showdown with the Tigers in Tennessee. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
