Alcorn State loses heartbreaker to Southern

Baton Rouge, LA—Alcorn State’s 48-42 loss came with several firsts for the Braves.  This was the first time this season that the Braves put points on the board.  Senior QB, Tim Buckley passed for an alarming 408 yards in a single game for the first time.  Terrance Lewis and Ryan Singleton scored their first collegiate touchdowns is Saturday’s heartbreaking loss to the Jags.

The Jags scored first with Bryant Lee connecting with Juamorris Stewart on an eleven yard pass.

In the second quarter, Southern University scored again before Alcorn State began to get things started. 

With almost nine minutes left in the second quarter, Tim Buckley aired out a seventy three yard pass to Terrance Lewis for an Alcorn State touchdown.  The Braves next spark would come when Roderick Williams intercepted Bryant Lee’s pass and returned it for twenty one yards. 

On 4^th and 6, Buckley connected with Antonio DeJarnett to tie the ball game at 14-14.

The Braves had a scoreless drought in the third quarter, allowing Southern to score 14 unanswered points to extend their lead by two touchdowns.

The fourth quarter was a do or die battle for the Braves as they tried to come from behind to upset the Jags.  Alcorn’s effort to win their first game had fans for both teams in awe as Buckley spreaded the ball around connecting with Antonio DeJarnett for a thirty-one yard pass to bring the score to 35-21. Not to be outdone Southern scored two times in the final quarter with touchdowns by Byron Williams (91 yard kickoff return) and Warren Matthews (63 yard pass). 

Ricardo Hill led the game with eleven tackles (5 solo and 6 assists) and 1.5 tackle for loss for seven yards. 

The Braves will face University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions on Thursday, Oct. 1 on ESPN-U.  Kickoff is set for 6:34 pm
