Alcorn State Second Half Performance Puts Them Over the G-Menby February 10, 2009
ALCORN STATE, MS – A close game turned into a rout as Alcorn State opened the second half with a 20-6 run en route to an 82-61 victory on Monday night in the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Alcorn State (5-19, 3-8 SWAC) took an early 7-0 lead but Grambling (6-16, 4-7 SWAC) stormed back and took an 18-17 advantage at the 8:14 mark after two free throws by Marcus Coleman. Alcorn State regained the lead several seconds later and pushed its margin up to 22-18 but Grambling answered with a 7-3 run to tie the contest at 25-all with 4:46 left on the clock.
Grambling took its second lead (28-27) of the half after an Ariece Perkins three-pointer and outscored ASU 9-3 over the next few minutes to claim a 34-30 advantage at the 2:02 mark. However, the lead was brief as ASU closed out the half strong with a 7-0 run for a 37-34 halftime margin.
The second was all ASU as the Braves dropped a barrage of three-pointers during a 20-6 run that concluded with them claiming a 57-40 lead with 13:49 left. Grambling never recovered from the run as the closest they would get was a 16-point margin with 8:44 left in the game.
Alcorn State was led by Troy Jackson's 21 points. Perkins led Grambling State with 17 points and five rebounds in 31 minutes of action.
Alcorn will hit the road as they take on Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena, Mississippi on Saturday, February 14th at 7:30 pm.
