LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State softball downs Arkansas – Pine Bluff in its home opener 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the Alcorn State Softball Complex. The Lady Braves take the victory over the Golden Lions in its first conference contest of the season to move to 4-13 overall and 1-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Kesley Lockridge led Alcorn at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance, while Genise Wells scored two runs, including one from a homer.
Kristian Edwards was the only Lady Brave to connect for extra bases, hitting a triple on two at-bats for one run and one RBI.
Alexa Veamoi was credited with the pitching victory. She threw for the entire seven-inning contest for four strikeouts, eight hits, two earned runs, and one walk.
UAPB struck first in the top of the second inning, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Lady Braves answered in the bottom of the frame, putting up two runs for their first lead. Wells took first base on balls, stole second, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. She eventually scored on a wild pitch. Sarah Kennedy scored the second run. She also walked to first and stole second and third. She advanced to home on a triple from Edwards to give Alcorn a 2-1 lead.
The third inning went scoreless, but both teams put up a run in the fourth frame. A single scored for the Golden Lions, while a home run from Wells gave the Lady Braves a 3-2 advantage.
Alcorn scored its final run in the sixth. Edwards walked and stole second and then scored on a ground out from Hannah Miller. The Lady Braves closed the contest with a 4-2 victory.
The Lady Braves will return to the field tomorrow for the final two games of the three-game series. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
