Alcorn Hires Noel as Head Soccer Coach

LORMAN, Miss. – A former international player with nearly 20 years of coaching experience, Junior Noel was named the new head coach of the Alcorn State University soccer program, director of athletics Derek Horne announced.

"To be able to land a coach of Junior's caliber to lead our soccer program is tremendous. He has the skills to provide a truly exceptional experience for our soccer student-athletes with his background both nationally and internationally," Horne said. "He is passionate about coaching at Alcorn and we couldn't be more excited to have him join our coaching staff."

Noel will lead the Lady Braves after spending the past two seasons at Copiah-Lincoln. With CoLin, he was the head coach of both the men's and women's soccer programs. Noel also coached at East Mississippi CC from 2007-10 as both the men's and women's head coach.

"I am really excited to coach at Alcorn and this is a tremendous opportunity. I'm ready to hit the ground running," Noel said. "The soccer program has been down for a while and I want to do everything in my power to help change that."

A native of Trinidad, Noel has experience on the international level as a player and coach. He played for the Caribbean Republic's national soccer team and moved to the United States in 1994 after accepting a soccer scholarship to the University of Mobile. As a student-athlete at Mobile, he was selected as a First-Team NAIA All-American in 1995 and 1997.

Upon graduation, Noel was an assistant for the University of Mobile from 1998-2000 on the women's side and on the men's side from 2010-2011. He has coached youth, select, and travel soccer in Trinidad, Mobile, and Meridian.

Noel also served as the head women's soccer coach at Cedar Valley College (Lancaster, Texas) during the 2014 season. He also held a stint as the head boys' soccer coach at Quitman High School and Lamar School in Meridian, Mississippi.

"I believe with a few added pieces there is potential here and we can be much more competitive than in years past," Noel said. "I met with the team for the first time yesterday and we had a very pleasant discussion. We are all excited for the upcoming season."

Noel takes over an Alcorn squad that returns nine starters including Freshman of the Year and All-Conference Second-Team honoree Rita Okoro. The Lady Braves bring back their top three goal scorers in Okoro (8), Yaira Guardado (5) and Viktoriya Mihaylova (4).
