Men's Basketball goes big, signs two big men

Alcorn State announces the sigining of Tyler Carter and Devon Brewer to the Brave's squad for the 2016-17 season.

Tyler Carter averaged 13.6 points per game last year and 6.7 rebounds while shooting over 38% from behind the arc. Carter chose Alcorn State over Stephen F. Austin, Air Force, Army and Boston University.

Here is what his high school Head Coach, Charles Allen had to say about Tyler:

"Tyler Carter is a 6'6" wing/small forward with a high skill level. He has the ability to score from outside with a smooth jump shot from the three point range, but also possesses the ability to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket against bigger and slower defenders who may try and guard him.  His height allows us to utilize him in the post when teams try to throw a smaller guard on him and he can score with a solid range of post moves and footwork."

"Tyler's work ethic is a quality that is refreshing and welcomed as his role  on our team has been one of a leadership position in which our players (and younger JV players as well) respond to his encouragement and drive by elevating their own level of play."

Tyler has become Steinbrenner High School's first Division I men's basketball recruit in committing to Alcorn State University and signed his scholarship, at a ceremony at Steinbrenner High School.  "We are all very happy and proud of Tyler for his opportunity to continue his education and to play collegiate basketball," said Coach Allen.

Devon Brewer, who became a very popular prospect since July, has committed to Alcorn State.

"I picked them because they felt like the best fit for me. I felt comfortable with the team and the coaches, and I feel like I can be great there," Brewer told HoopSeen.

Brewer is a big 6-foot-8 post player who likes to play with his back to the basket. He will give the Braves a lot of size and good potential to become a very good offensive player on the block. He is coming off of a good showing in the travel season with Atlanta All Stars.

Here is what his high school coach said:

Devon is a four year Varsity player and three year starter for Hiram High School, Hiram, GA.  Alcorn St. University is getting a steal with a commitment from Devon Brewer.  Devon is young man that is very capable of reaching his full potential as a student-athlete at Alcorn St. University.  Coach Robinson and his staff were relentless in their pursuit to recruit Devon.  Credit goes to them for what they saw as a 'diamond in the rough'. Devon will have the opportunity to get an great education from one of the best institutions in the country. Devon is a player that has limitless potential. Basketball writers and coaches would consider him as a true post player, who can play with his back to the basket, good feet, and the ability to use both hands in the paint.  As his High School coach, I have full faith that Coach Robinson & his staff will do a fantastic job on & off the court with Devon for the years to come.

"Coach Robinson is excited and so is the rest of the coaching staff for me to help start a new legacy at Alcorn State," said Brewer.
