LeAntwan Luckett scored 20 points to lead the Braves past Mississippi College, 87-61 at the Davey L. Whitney Complex tonight.
Luckett knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Braves ahead 3-0 early in the first half but Mississippi College kept the game close for the remainder of the first half.
The Choctaws tied the game at 7-7 at the 14:52 mark on a layup by Willie Williams.
Marquis Vance came in and gave the Braves a spark off the bench scoring 10 of his 16 points in the first half. He scored five consecutive points to give the Braves a 13-9 lead with just a little over 13 minutes left in the first half.
The Choctaws battled back quickly going on a 7-2 run which led to their first lead of the game 16-15 on a 3-pointer by Christian Howard.
Later, senior guard
Anthony Evans recorded one of his four steals on the night and dished it off to
Tyrel Hunt for a layup to give the Braves their largest lead of the first half, 30-23 with 1:48 to go before the half.
The Braves were ahead 32-27 at the half over the Choctaws.
Mississippi College would score the first basket in the second half but the Braves took control of the game from there.
At the 15:25 the Braves went on 17-4 run after a layup and one by Vance to increase the Braves lead to 61-42.
Luckett anchored the Braves for the remainder of the second half scoring 10 of his 20 points in the second half.
The Braves (2-1) scored 55 points in the second half after only scoring 32 in the first. As a team the Braves recorded 15 steals in tonight's victory.
Hunt and Vance finished with career-highs of 18 and 16 points, respectively for the Braves. Vance shot 83 percent from the field.
The Choctaws were led by Williams with 18 points. Emmanuel Ezejiofo scored 13 points and Jaron Edwards chipped in 10 points.
The Braves return to action next Monday night as they welcome Dillard University to the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Tip-off is set to begin at 7pm.
