Football Kicks Off Preseason Training Camp

ALCORN STATE, MS - The Alcorn State football team held its first preseason practice on Thursday, August 2, 2012 under new head coach Jay Hopson.

The Braves welcomed 95 players to preseason camp, including 19 returning starters (6 offense, 7defense, 6 special teams). The top returners to camp include senior wide receiver Terrance Lewis, senior line backer Robert Gainwell, junior running back Arnold Walker, junior quarterback Darius Smith, and sophomore defensive back Casey Freeman.

Coach Hopson arrived at Alcorn State following a stint at the University of Memphis as defensive coordinator. During his tenure as a coach, he received All-American Football Foundation Top Assistant Coach Honor in 2007. In addition to Memphis, he brings experience from Marshall, Delta State, Southern Mississippi, and Michigan.

Alcorn State will have full squad practices August 2-10, 2012 at 6:35 A.M. August 13-17 practices will be 7:10 A.M. and 2:30 P.M. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday and Thursday. August 21-24 practices will be at 3:30 P.M. 

A Purple and Gold scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, August 18, at 7:00 P.M. at Spinks-Casem Stadium.  ASU Football Media Day will also be on August 18 from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at the Davey Whitney Athletic Complex.

ASU opens the 2012 season on Saturday, September 1, at Independence Stadium against the Grambling State Tigers. In the weeks following the season opener, the Braves will travel to Harrisonburg, VA to play James Madison University, September 8, they will play host to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, September 15, before they hit the road to face off with Arkansas State on Saturday, September 22, to round out the month of September the Braves will host the Hornets of Alabama State for Homecoming on the 29th
