Lady Braves Finish Third and Braves Finish Sixth in the SWAC Cross Country Championship

CLINTON, MS --The Alcorn State men and women cross country teams participated in the SWAC Championships this morning at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, MS.

The women's team showed major improvement from last year's 8th place finish placing 3rd with a total of 107 points behind SWAC champions Alabama State (42) and runner-up Mississippi Valley (77).  It was the highest finish for the Lady Braves since the 2000 season.  Junior Condrea Collins placed 6th in the 5K race with a time of 18:56.  Collins earned a spot on the All-SWAC Second Team which was also a first in many years for the Lady Braves.  Freshman Brandi McCray was the next Lady Brave to come in finishing four spots from the top 10 placing 14th with a time of 19:55.  Ka'Shield Shaw placed 27th with a time of 20:42.  Sheray Reese and Desiree Benson placed 28th and 32nd with times of 20:44 and 20:51 respectively to round out the top 5 runners.

On the men's side, the Braves placed 6th overall with a total of 162 points.  The men were led by freshman Mario Martinez, who ran a personal best time of 28:09 in the 8K race placing 20th.  Sophomore Trevee Kelly also posted a personal best and wasn't to far behind Martinez placing 24th with a time of 28:33.  Denarius White finished 38th with a time of 30:30.  Darien Hennington and Charles Marsaw round out the Braves top runners placing 41st and 45th with times of 30:54 and 31:42 respectively.

Coach Herman Williamson was pleased with both teams performances.  "Overall we had a great season and me and my staff saw some positive things from our young group of runners.  It feels good to finally push up in the standings after some down years," said Williamson.

Coach Williamson and his staff now turn their attentions to the outdoor season where they look to improve in those standings as well and hopefully culminating with a championship.
