Alcorn State, MS —Former head Men's Basketball Coach, Davey L. Whitney, Sr., will be honored by Magnolia Bar Association on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson, MS.
Whitney will be one of the recipients of the Harriet Tubman Awards. The Magnolia Bar's prestigious annual Harriet Tubman Awards for community leadership will be presented at the Mid-Winter Banquet to Mississippians from each of our five (5) regional districts who have distinguished themselves as trailblazers and stalwarts in the fields of business, civil rights, religion and/or politics.
As the head coach at Alcorn State University, Whitney amassed a record of 509-292 and produced 12 SWAC Championships. For his hard work and dedication to the program, he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
The Magnolia Bar Foundation will also award a $1000 Scholarship to a Mississippi Law student. Since its inception in 1990, the Foundation has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to law students. In addition, more than four hundred and fifty students have participated in the foundation's Annual Girls and Boys Camps, while a greater number of high school students participated in the foundation's Mock Trial Competition and were awarded scholarships for their top performance.
